Dan River Release Destinations
Dan River Prison Work Farm is a minimum-custody adult male institution operated by the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction. A completed prison term can end physical confinement and begin post-release supervision. An eligible older-law sentence can lead to parole. Other movements can send a person to another state institution or legal custodian. Only the first two situations describe a release from confinement, and both may leave an active community-supervision record.
Dan River's location in Blanch does not make Caswell County the automatic release destination. NCDAC's Inmate Release Search uses “release county” as a destination field. A Dan River discharge can appear under a different county when that is where the person is released. A CASWELL search can also return someone released from a different prison. The institution, destination, and supervising office are distinct facts.
Find a Dan River Release
The main release path is NCDAC Offender Public Information. OPI includes state-prison history, releases, probation, parole, post-release supervision, and absconder records. It does not contain ordinary Caswell County jail bookings. An offender number is the best starting field. Name searches can be broadened with Soundex and narrowed with date of birth, age, sex, race, or ethnic group when identity needs to be separated.
- Open the NCDAC OPI offender search and search by offender number or name.
- Use All status if the person might still be on community supervision. Inactive alone can hide that possibility.
- Select the matching offender number and confirm identity with more than one available field.
- Find Dan River among current, admitting, or previous locations and note the related movement date.
- Read incarceration status, Last Movement, Actual Release Date, detainer flag, and supervision status as a group.
- If the record reports a transfer, continue with the new NCDAC location. If it reports release, verify the destination and any assigned supervision office.
Projected Release Date is a sentence estimate, not confirmation that a discharge took place. Actual Release Date is stronger, but it must still be matched to the relevant incarceration episode. Historical sentence rows can remain after a newer episode begins, and summary dates can differ from sentence-level dates. Read Dan River Release Records
OPI works best when its fields are treated as a timeline. Admission and location connect the person to Dan River. Last Movement shows what happened after that location. Actual Release Date can close the incarceration. Probation, parole, or post-release fields show whether NCDAC oversight continued outside prison. A detainer can point to another legal claim on custody that affects where the person went.

The institution phone is useful for a current operational question about Dan River. NCDAC OPI and the department's records office are better for enduring discharge evidence. The Caswell County Sheriff does not own a Dan River state-prison release record. Likewise, the Caswell Clerk may hold a related county court case but does not replace NCDAC's sentence and movement record.

Dan River Custody Profile
NCDAC identifies Dan River Prison Work Farm as a minimum-custody facility for adult men with an official capacity of 640. It opened in 1996. The capacity number describes the institution's stated scale. It is not a current population count, a count of annual admissions, or a count of releases. No reliable facility-specific annual release volume was found.
Minimum custody is an institutional classification. It does not promise a release date, release county, or a particular path out. Sentence computation, earned-time credits or losses, court corrections, detainers, and the individual record control those outcomes. Under North Carolina structured sentencing, the minimum term must be served, while earned time may reduce the maximum but not below the minimum.
Dan River Release County
Three geographic facts often get mistaken for one. The institution county says where NCDAC held the person. The conviction county identifies the court connected to a sentence. The release county in NCDAC's grouped search is the destination associated with a state-prison release. Dan River is in Caswell County, but the other two fields can name other places.

A person released from a prison elsewhere may therefore appear in a CASWELL destination search. A person discharged from Dan River may not. Start with the individual's OPI page when identity and custody history matter. Use the county-and-month release search when the goal is to review state releases connected to a destination.
Dan River Opened in 1996
Dan River officially opened in 1996, but it is only one part of Caswell County's unusual correctional geography. The county also contains the medium-custody Caswell Correctional Center and the Sheriff-operated Caswell County Detention Center. A late-nineteenth-century former jail remains behind the historic courthouse as a separate landmark. Each site has a different role and record owner.
This history makes precise facility names more than a matter of style. “Caswell jail” can refer loosely to a place that is not a jail at all. Dan River and Caswell Correctional are state prisons. The County Park Road facility is the active local jail. A move between any of these custodians must be traced through the sending record and the receiving record before it can be called a community release.
Dan River Discharge Documentation
When public OPI fields do not resolve a state release, send a focused request through the NCDAC public-records channel. Supply the offender number, names, date range, and the exact public fields needed. Useful targets include admission and release dates, sentence length, time served, or a public movement or destination entry. Ask for electronic delivery when available.
NCDAC says simple requests may take days and complex requests can take weeks or months, with review, redaction, or staged production. That is practical guidance, not a promised deadline. Detailed supervision case files are generally confidential, so requesting the full file is not the right path when the public question is limited to whether supervision is active and which office OPI displays.
A release alert from NC SAVAN can add timely notice. It does not replace OPI, and registration does not necessarily follow the person after transfer. North Carolina instructs users to register again when a transfer changes the reporting custodian. County and DAC records may also use different offender identifiers.

Dan River Records After Expunction
A record that later disappears is not proof that the Dan River imprisonment or discharge never existed. North Carolina expunction law can remove qualifying court information from public view. G.S. 15A-146 provides automatic expunction after final disposition for certain cases entirely dismissed or resulting in not guilty or not responsible on or after December 1, 2021, subject to exceptions. The scheduled period is 180 to 210 days after final disposition.
The automatic expunction statute is captured below. It concerns qualifying case records and should not be turned into a blanket promise that every state correctional entry will vanish.
G.S. 15A-151 makes expunged court records confidential with limited statutory access. It also gives the subject a route to seek confirmation or copies of their own record from the clerk. A prior screenshot, a current OPI result, and a later no-result may therefore reflect a legal record change rather than a search error.
